What is NewForm, and why is The Phoenix App changing?
NewForm is the future, the next evolution of the recovery movement—a transformation of The Phoenix App from a single-org tool into a central hub for substance use and mental health support. While The Phoenix programs remain central to our mission, NewForm expands the platform to connect individuals with a broader network of resources that align with our values.
This community of communities has the potential to engage millions of people by making it easier for individuals to find the support they need, whether through Phoenix programs or complementary services. It’s a bold step forward that allows us to scale our impact, meet growing demand, and allow core Phoenix to stay focused on what it does best: volunteer stewardship, community building, and fostering connection through meaningful activities.
Why is The Phoenix making this change?
Over the past 12 months, The Phoenix has piloted a free marketplace where recovery and mental health organizations can connect with our community, offering members greater access to support. The results have been remarkable—on average, 1.5x as many members using the App to supplement their Phoenix experience report improved mental health within a month—reinforcing the need to expand this platform to meet members where they are and provide the resources they need for their unique healing journeys.
Why is The Phoenix getting involved in mental health? I thought we were about recovery from substance use.
Substance use recovery and mental health are deeply interconnected. Many of the people we serve face overlapping challenges, and addressing mental health alongside substance use allows us to provide more holistic support. Expanding into mental health doesn’t change our core mission—it strengthens it by helping more people build connections, find purpose, and thrive in recovery.
Why is mental health being added to our focus now?
The need has never been greater. Over 1 in 3 Americans are facing either mental health struggles, substance use challenges, or both, and deaths of despair have risen sharply since the COVID-19 pandemic. The Phoenix has always been about empowering people through connection and resilience—NewForm expands that mission to address these urgent and intertwined challenges in a way that complements the work you’re already doing.
Does this mean Phoenix is moving away from its mission?
Not at all. The Phoenix’s mission remains grounded in building supportive communities and empowering people to transform into the best versions of themselves. NewForm simply adds another layer of support by addressing mental health, a key factor in long-term recovery success. This is an evolution, not a change in direction—it’s about deepening our impact while staying true to our roots.
How do I explain this to people I lead?
We’ll provide you with talking points and scripts for conversations with members and during your events. The Phoenix remains the trusted community that members know, with programs at the heart of the experience. Everyone’s recovery journey is unique, requiring different support at different times. By adding mental health resources through NewForm, we’re strengthening the recovery movement and meeting people where they are with what they need, when they need it.
How will this help me in my day-to-day work?
We know your time is valuable, which is why NewForm is designed to make your work easier. It provides more comprehensive tools to help members find the resources they need, whether within Phoenix or beyond. For example, instead of spending extra time guiding members toward outside services, NewForm streamlines this process with expanded resource options that share Phoenix’s values. This means you’ll more time focused on what you do best: fueling the recovery movement.
